Training Times: TBD

What is Seamanship?

Picture
Seamanship is the art of operating a ship or boat.

It involves topics and development of specialized skills including: navigation and international maritime law; weather, meteorology and forecasting; watchstanding; ship-handling and small boat handling; operation of deck equipment, anchors and cables; ropework and line handling; communications; sailing; engines; execution of evolutions such as towing; cargo handling equipment, dangerous cargoes and cargo storage; dealing with emergencies; survival at sea and search and rescue; and fire fighting.

Knots

Picture
There is a large variety of knots, each with properties that make it suitable for a range of tasks. Some knots are used to attach the rope (or other knotting material) to other objects such as another rope, cleat, ring, or stake. Some knots are used to bind or constrict objects. Decorative knots usually bind to themselves to produce attractive patterns. Click on the Bow-line to find step by step videos on how to tie various types of knots. Click on the Double figure-eight knot to find a knot handbook with over 156 illustrations.

Ship's Boats

Picture
Ship's boats are utility boats carried by larger vessels to act as tenders among other roles. You can learn how to drive these boats by taking the Small Craft Operator Program available on Sunday. Click on the cadet heaving line to find out more.

Cargo Handling

Sheer Legs (Shears, Sheers, or Shear legs) are a form of two-legged lifting device, that were used by sailboats and dockyards for tasks such as lifting masts and heavier parts of the rigging on board. Below are videos from RCSCC PORT AUGUSTA about the construction of Sheer Legs.
